Book Exhibition

Jammie Keddie

Jamie Keddie will be a plenary speaker at the 11th Foreign Languages Forum that will take place in Athens on 26 & 27 August. Here is a small preview of what we expect to hear on Saturday 26/8.

Jamie's Plenary - Saturday 26/8 -11:30 - 12:20 - Olympia B Room

The teacher as a storyteller

It is often teachers of young learners who are the quickest to embrace teacher-led storytelling as a way of engaging students and structuring lessons. But we are considering a classroom craft which is far too valuable and versatile to be associated exclusively with one group alone. In this practical talk, I would like to share a number of teacher-led storytelling skills, activities and devices which will be suitable for all types of language teachers and learners.

A few things about Jamie

Jamie Keddie is a Barcelona-based Scot with a love for storytelling, a passion for teaching, and an obsession for YouTube. He is the author of three books: Videotelling (Lessonstream Books, 2017), Online Video(Oxford University Press, 2014), and Images (Oxford University Press, 2009). Jammie is also the founder of Lessonstream, the popular resource site for teachers. He is well known in the world of English Language Teaching. Since 2008, he has shared his insight, ideas, and expertise with teachers and educators in over 40 different countries.

Do not miss Jamie's plenary session and workshop on 26 August 2017 at 11:30 - 12:20 - Olympia B Room

Jamie's Workshop - Saturday 26/8 - 16:00 - 18:00 - Attica Room

Online video and critical thinking

We are living in an age when virtually anyone can publish content online. Unfortunately, the result can be a fight for clicks, shares and views. And in the absence of codes of conduct or standards of practice, dubious online activities have become commonplace.

In this practical workshop, I would like to share a story that has come out of online video culture. Teachers of screenagers can make use of this story in their own classrooms to encourage discussion and to raise students' critical awareness of online video content.

 Participants will learn:

  • How to use online videos in the classroom to generate discussion and develop students' speaking skills.
  • Evaluate video content according to classroom level and topic of interest.
  • Enhance their students' critical thinking by evaluating the reliability of sources and by identifying bias, logical fallacies and deceptive arguments.

Michael's Plenary - Sunday 26/8 -11:30 - 12:20 - Olympia B Room

Digital Learning: Current Trends in Language Education Technology 2017-2020 and how we can keep our schools innovative

The world is changing very rapidly and what students and parents expect from language schools and English language teachers is changing rapidly.  Do you have a MOOC or an LMS for your school?  Do your teachers map their competences against the Cambridge Digital Framework?  Are you planning to invest in VR or ASR activities?  What do you think of the Internet of Things?  Does this all sound like gobbley-gook?

Developments in digital technology will become more important over the next few years in ELT as digital takes a bigger role in everyday life and in education generally.  This talk looks at thedigital trends, the new technologies coming down the pipeline, what kind of new activities this may lead to, and how to prepare schools – and their teachers – for this innovative age.

Michael's Workshop - Sunday 27/8 - 15:30 - 17:30 - Attica Room (By invitation only)

Future-Proofing Your School: delighting your customers

This workshop focuses on the benefits of innovation and technology to your school now – and into the future. How can innovative approaches to service delivery and educational technology – IWBs, apps, translators,  tablets - support teachers and make learning more exciting and effective for your learners?

How can the latest digital tools improve the customer experience for your students? Not only in the classroom, but in the other ways that they interact with the school.

Technology in schools is not just for the classroom – we can use it to improve all aspects of the school’s work. For example:

  • How can you improve your marketing and get more students?
  • How can you ‘delight’ your customers so they keep coming back and re-enrolling in new courses?
  • How can you improve students’ outcomes and achievements so they feel they have chosen the best school?

We will look at both established and emerging innovations &  technologies and how we can harness them to improve the quality of our teaching and learning and help our students succeed Participants will engage in innovation activities and a Digital Audit of their school.

10:30 - 11:20 - Dealing with Discipline Problems: ten practical tips (Featured Presentation)

Luke Prodromou
We can’t spark a desire in our students to learn English unless we first get them to concentrate, to have self-discipline - in short, to behave themselves.

This highly practical and interactive session demonstrates at least ten tried and tested techniques for managing disruptive behaviour in the ELT classroom. We focus particularly on the very first lesson with a new class at the start of the school year because it is then that expectations are raised - or lowered- positive routines are established and boundaries are drawn.

15:30 - 16:20 - Vocabulary Revision Strategies (Featured Presentation)

Nick Michelioudakis
With more than 900 shares, more than 2,300 ‘Likes’ and more than 17,000 hits on my blog, ‘Vocabulary Revision Strategies’ is my most popular presentation ever. This never ceases to amaze me, as my real specialty is ‘Psychology and ELT’.
Yet time and again, people ask for this particular talk – whether I happen to be in Poland or Saudi Arabia or China. So why this interest? For me the answer is simple; many colleagues feel they could do with some help in this particular area.
To see whether you too fall into this category, ask yourself the following two questions: a) Which is the most important aspect of language learning? b) How do your students try to learn words? If your answer to (a) is ‘vocabulary’ and to (b) ‘memorisation’, then this workshop is for you.
In the talk I am going to present ten very simple, very easy ways in which you can help your students develop good vocabulary learning strategies – regardless of their level. A link to the handouts means that you can start using these techniques immediately.

16:30 - 17:20 - Deportivo Publishing: More haste, less speed

Professor Tracey Sinclair -Bachelor Degree in Pedagogy with a specialisation in Alternative Education

We all know that by doing a little often is good if you want to improve in anything. This philosophy is especially true when applied to language learning. This presentation will discuss how we teachers can assist our students in learning the English language while developing 21st century skills.

This is not a ‘learn to walk before you run’ type of thing; this is more like following the concept of ‘slowly and surely’. Examples and suggestions will be shared throughout the presentation.

17:30 - 18:30 - The English language theatre, Luke and Friends, present their new show: Ladies in Love and Marriage.

Five sketches inspired by the work of Jane Austen, Agatha Christie, Charles Dickens and Oscar Wilde, on the theme of women in love and the delights and disappointments of marriage. To get the new school year off to a lively and humorous start!

With: Lilika Couri, Anna Papadaki, Vicky Saran, Nick Michelioudakis, Cliff Parry, Agapi Dendaki, Dimitris Primalis, Luke Prodromou - and introducing Alex Mel.

Αξιολόγηση και βελτίωση της διδασκαλίας μας

Dealing with Discipline Problems in the ELT Classroom: Practical Techniques

Discipline problems are a bit of a taboo subject in ELT Methodology. Most of us have got one but few like to admit it. Getting students' attention and getting them to behave in a respectful manner towards their classmates and the teacher remains a major and neglected issue in most language teaching approaches. In this highly interactive-talk, we tackle the problem head-on with an approach that recognizes and makes the most of diversity in the classroom and combines pedagogic principles and practical techniques of classroom management.
