Plenary Sessions

Dealing with exams and exam preparation needs in a multi-exam context.
Dr Irene Papakammenou

Greece has a strong examination culture which has changed significantly since more exams are developed and enter the market. Currently, 23 English language examinations are administered at B2 level and 17 at C2 level in Greece and they are approved by ASEP. This multi-exam context (Papakammenou, 2016) is rather challenging for both teachers and school owners.

Such a context has both a negative and positive influence on teachers, students and school owners as well as on how exam preparation classes are formed and how teachers teach. Teachers struggle to choose an exam for their students, they find difficulties in organizing such classes and they often teach to the test in order to raise their students’ scores and make them succeed in the exams. On the other hand, multi-exam contexts provide more opportunities for language learning and they help teachers and students deal with the stress and insecurities that exams create.

The presentation presents and describes the nature of the multi-exam context and it provides ways to handle such a context and use it in favour of the teachers and students. It refers on research and classroom practice in exam preparation courses in Greek frontistiria. It also considers issues for teacher development and training in order to better handle a multi-exam context. The presentation offers language teachers, administrators, teacher trainers, test constructors and material writers and publishers, insights directly relevant to their needs.
