Plenary Sessions

Dr Luke Prodromou: Common mistakes teachers make

The aim of this talk is to explore with participants, in a lively and interactive manner, the mistakes teachers make on the level of classroom management, planning and interaction with students, such as: failure to establish rapport, trying to do too much, being unprepared, discipline problems and much, much more. A highly practical, informative and humorous ‘therapy session’ for all teachers interested in becoming the best teacher they can possibly be!

Dr Luke Prodromou: A Creative Approach to Exam Preparation Classes

This talk explores a more creative approach to exam preparation. Testing is important and should be part and parcel of an integrated approach to teaching as education and not something which undermines our attempts to teach effectively. Testing is often used as a short cut to extrinsic motivation – but, I argue, we can make test preparation more a process of intrinsic motivation by making it more creative. I suggest ways of testing which make it consistent with good teaching practice, where motivation addresses the whole person and not just the person-as-exam-candidate – and which gets the best exam results!

Dr Aggeliki Deligianni: Cooperative Learning: Is it worth getting to the trouble?

Cooperative learning is more elaborate than group work activity. Cooperative learning should be employed as part of a classroom management system. If we train our students to work effectively in groups, the results can be a very productive and fun learning environment. Too good to be true? Well, yes and no. A number of techniques can be of great help and we shall elaborate on three of them. We shall see for ourselves  their benefits and we shall also look at ways of dealing with arising problems as it would be misleading to suggest  that  cooperative classes always go smoothly.
