Workshop:Teaching English, Teaching Values: Methods and Techniques – November 1 Athens

Values Education through English Language Learning

When we teach English we also teach values: attitudes to social and global issues but we also convey an attitude towards human values such as love, peace, cooperation, truth, courage, compassion, respect for all cultures, and so on.

Intercultural understanding

English is not only a means of improved communication; it can also have a role in promoting global understanding and respect.

Teaching English as Education

In this workshop, we present practical ways for motivating learners to learn English and, at the same time, raising their awareness of the world outside the classroom. We aim to show that this process can be engaging and entertaining: we demonstrate a wide variety of techniques:

• humour
• games
• role-play and drama techniques
• communicative activities
• literature: poetry, prose and drama
• cross-cultural awareness

The presenters believe that touching on wider social issues in an entertaining way makes language more memorable and effective – and can even lead to better exam results! Creativity and imagination bring learning to life by involving the personality of the learners.
