In a rapidly evolving educational landscape, English language certification remains a cornerstone for academic and professional advancement. Since its introduction to the Greek market in 2016, the Learning Resource Network (LRN) has emerged as a trusted and accessible examination provider, offering CEFR-aligned qualifications from B1 to C2. Over the past decade, LRN has steadily gained recognition among students, teachers, and language schools for its learner-focused approach, practical structure, and commitment to quality.
As it approaches a ten-year milestone in Greece, LRN continues to adapt and innovate—meeting the changing needs of learners while upholding international standards. In this interview, Angelos Boulntoumis, Director of Esolnet Hellas, explores the journey of LRN exams in Greece, the factors driving their popularity, the unique pedagogical advantages they offer, and the recent developments that are shaping their future.
- When did the LRN English language exams first begin in Greece, and how has their presence evolved over the years?
The LRN (Learning Resource Network) English exams were first introduced in Greece in January 2016, offering standardised English language certification aligned with the CEFR (B1–C2). Initially, they catered to students and professionals needing recognised English qualifications for studies/work abroad.
From a 2016 pilot program to a mainstream option, LRN carved a niche in Greece by prioritising accessibility and practicality. Its 2026-decade milestone reflects steady growth, despite fierce competition and hints at further innovation.
- What do you believe makes the LRN exams particularly popular among Greek students and language schools?
The LRN exam structure really helps teachers guide students in developing their English skills in a more connected way. By introducing the speaking syllabus early on and using it throughout the school year, teachers can boost both speaking and writing skills, while also preparing students for the exam.
The speaking part of the exam is especially useful as it naturally supports writing development. Having regular discussions in class based on the syllabus topics gives students the chance to organise their thoughts clearly, expand their vocabulary, and improve their grammar, skills which can then be applied when writing. This approach allows the candidates to practice in a way that strengthens both their speaking fluency and writing abilities, as they learn to structure their ideas effectively.
The way the listening and writing sections of the LRN exam work together is also a great advantage. For example, Section 3 of the listening test, along with Task 1 in writing, creates a chance for students to practice multiple skills at once. In class, teachers can get students to listen to recordings, pull out key information, and then put that into writing. This method helps develop both listening comprehension and the ability to write well. Not only does it prepare students for what they will face on the exam, but it also reflects how these skills come together in the real world.
With a passing mark of just 50%, the LRN exam provides a goal that is achievable without being too overwhelming. It is a balanced approach that helps keep students motivated while still maintaining a certain level of challenge. Teachers can use this feature to create an atmosphere where the exam feels like a natural part of the learning process rather than something stressful.
By using the LRN syllabus as a year-long framework for teaching, instead of just focusing on exam prep, educators help students learn English in a more natural way. The syllabus becomes both a guide for lessons and a tool for meaningful language practice. This helps students grow into more confident and capable English speakers and writers, making exam prep feel like a smooth part of their overall learning, rather than a big, separate hurdle.
- How does the LRN ensure that its exams meet international standards and remain relevant in a competitive language testing environment?
The LRN ESOL exams are benchmarked with the European Framework for Languages.
Quality is assured by the continuous, strict compliance with OFQUAL regulations.
At every exam event detailed records are kept and communicated to the overseeing authorities.
Overall, quality assurance at every step of the process lies with the Awarding Organisation and the regulatory Authority.
- Can you describe the typical profile of a candidate who takes the LRN exams in Greece?
What makes the LRN examination system stand out is how respectfully it accommodates learners of all ages and abilities. We have seen first-hand how even students who initially struggle with English can transform into confident test-takers through consistent preparation with these exams. The beauty lies in their structure, being challenging enough to be meaningful, yet accessible enough that with proper guidance, even average students can aim for and achieve distinction-level results.
There is something genuinely reassuring about how the LRN tests build confidence. The goal is not just to assess language skills, but to help students reach a point where they walk into that exam room already certain of their success. This psychological aspect matters tremendously in language testing. Younger learners taking their first serious English exams, like the B1 level test, particularly benefit from this approach.
The consistency across exam levels plays a huge role here. Whether a student is taking B1 or C2, they will encounter familiar formats and question types. Undeniably, this eliminates so much of the unnecessary stress that comes with standardised testing. Instead of worrying about unexpected tasks or strange instructions, students can focus entirely on demonstrating what they have learned. It is this smart design - combining rigorous assessment with learner-friendly features - that makes the LRN system work so well for such a wide range of candidates.
At its core, the LRN exam does more than test English proficiency; it builds examination literacy. Students do not just learn the language - they learn how to showcase their knowledge effectively. That is a skill that serves them well beyond any single test date.
- Are there any recent updates or innovations in the LRN exam formats or preparation materials that candidates should beware of?
The LRN examination system has undergone significant updates to better support candidates and educators in the 2024 testing cycle. These innovations focus on digital integration, exam preparation resources, and enhanced accessibility across all proficiency levels.
One of the most notable developments is the expansion of interactive online resources. The platform now features comprehensive grammar exercises that provide immediate feedback, allowing test-takers to identify and address their weaknesses systematically. These exercises are carefully aligned with the CEFR framework, ensuring targeted preparation for each exam level.
For the writing component, LRN has introduced instructional video guides that break down the letter and essay writing process. These visual resources demonstrate proper structure, tone, and language use through practical examples, making them particularly valuable for candidates who benefit from multimodal learning. The speaking test has received similar attention, with new demonstration videos that walk through the entire examination procedure step-by-step. These videos showcase real candidate interactions at various proficiency levels, from B1 through C2, providing clear benchmarks for expected performance.
Teacher support has also been enhanced through specialised training initiatives. LRN now offers regular webinars that guide instructors on effectively implementing the speaking syllabus in classroom settings. These sessions cover examination techniques, assessment criteria, and strategies for building students' communicative confidence. The webinars serve as both professional development opportunities and practical guides for exam preparation.
Accessibility improvements include streamlined digital registration processes and expanded testing center availability. These changes aim to reduce administrative barriers while maintaining the assessment's rigorous standards. The updates collectively represent LRN's commitment to creating a more transparent, approachable examination system that supports candidates throughout their preparation journey and gives them clear pathways to success.
