ArtificialIntelligence:A New Plateau in Education

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has created a new era in education. In the beginning, there was suspicion and fear for the newcomer. Ethical and practical concerns have arisen creating a significant reluctance in its adoption. However, as time passes, we are becoming more familiar with this new tool, which offers multiple forms of assistance to the teacher's daily routine while offering students innovative ways of engagement. This article will focus on the latest trends and the transition to the brand-new era in the education world. Let’s explore the pros and cons!

AI in education has two opposing poles, these are: educators and learners. They both can benefit significantly when it is used in a structured and balanced manner. Educators may use AI for automated grading that assesses students’ work quickly, so there is more room for interactive teaching. It can also analyse students' progress and produce reports on common errors so teachers can tailor their lessons to specific areas of trouble. At the same time, it gets easier to discover learners who are falling behind and make an effort to intervene and provide specific support.

Learners, on the other hand, may benefit greatly from AI. Applications such as Kahoot or Quizlet can support them with troublesome areas in their language study, transforming learning into an interactive experience. So, what is the gain? It’s engagement! Learners are trained in self-studying, practicing, and experimenting with the target language.

Another question would be: are there benefits of digital tools in ELT? And the answer is ‘yes’; numerous and constructive ones exist. They can personalise learning, be adaptive to learners’ needs, and be focused on the target language. Students who are engaged with the scrutinizing areas discover that learning can be fun and interactive. It is also flexible since learners use it at their own pace and time, which leads to a more inclusive education.

Additionally, AI chatbots and Virtual Tutors play the role of personal conversational partners. They are a natural interface supporting language learning and open a new window to language practice in an interactive and low-pressure environment. These tools provide explanations that can be valuable to learners since their educator cannot be available at their convenience. Tensions and fears seem to be relieved, and this tends to facilitate assimilation. There are numerous apps to promote this fascinating AI application, many of which support free versions. It is really fun for teachers to create their own avatar and leave learners to explore the potentiallities. Smile: A new era opens up…

However, as with everything else in life, AI is not without limitations and risks. Overdependence on AI may harm language production due to the hindrance of learners’ critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Similarly, a minimization of human interaction and a loss of useful social skills could lead to isolation. It goes without saying, that the bond of teacher-learner is strong and constructive. It is necessary to continue to work as it is, as this seems to be a means for well-developed personalities. AI should complement the classroom and not replace the teacher-student interaction. We should all keep in mind that teachers offer personalized guidance, emotional support, and cultural insights. It’s a dynamic and motivating bond that cannot be replaced by digital devices. Teachers often become role models, and learners wish to follow in their footsteps. They may be inspired to develop deeper engagement and self-confidence in learning, too.

Are there any black marks? The truth is that there is concern about Internet problems, together with access. Internet instability can create inequalities. Those who have stable connections have an advantage over those without. Additionally, slow bandwidth can equally disrupt lessons and lead to frustration, which ultimately would lead to overall disappointment and disengagement.

Considering all these challenges, we could summarise the use of AI for both teachers and learners into the following ideas. Educators may play a crucial role in the integration of AI in the classroom. It would be more constructive if they attended professional development programmes to delve into how to incorporate AI tools in a way that can enhance instead of replace traditional teaching methods. Ethics of AI use is critical to ensure responsible implementation. Without proper training, we run the risk of false use, leading new generations to uncharted waters. Undoubtedly, there is also a need, mainly for learners, to receive training on the way they positively use AI. Simply copying or getting ready-made material will lead to superficial knowledge, which will have a negative impact on their future professional lives.

Are there ways of effectively using AI? Definitely yes! One way would be that of Blended learning. The combination of traditional teaching methods with AI tools. Second, students should be encouraged to analyse and give explanations on the material they get. This way, their critical thinking will be empowered. Students need to be trained to evaluate the given information and broaden their presentation.

In essence, AI and digital technology can be significant assets in the ELT classroom, offering personalized learning experiences, strong engagement, and  greater flexibility. If used responsibly and balanced, they can be of great assistance, both to learners and educators. It is best to realise that AI can complement rather than replace traditional teaching methods.
