British Council’s Seminars for FCEfS Candidates

British Council FCEfS candidates receive practical exam tips from Cambridge ESOL in a special event that leaves students, parents and their teachers enthused!

Candidates, who registered to take the First Certificate in English for Schools exam in December 2012 with the British Council, were given the opportunity to attend a pre-exam seminar in Athens and Thessaloniki.

On 25 November 2012, Olga Leondaris in Athens and Stephen Taylor in Thessaloniki provided the candidates with practical advice to help them feel more confident on the exam day. They were given tips on how to tackle a variety of tasks in the Reading, Writing and Speaking Papers.

The candidates participated enthusiastically in the activities designed to demonstrate how they can improve their test performance by utilising effective strategies like skimming and scanning texts, recognizing paraphrase (Reading), identifying and addressing key content points appropriately (Writing), responding with extended and relevant contributions (Speaking).

Some parents and teachers also sat in on these free of charge seminars and were very appreciative of this British Council/University of Cambridge ESOL joint initiative.

“As a school owner who has co-operated successfully with the British Council for many years, I was impressed by your seminar on the 25th of November 2012. It was professionally organised and I found both the comments and the interaction really helpful. It was also a good opportunity for the students to have their questions answered as well as a good support for the teachers.”
Eleni Niarchou, School owner – Megara, Attiki”

“I believe the content of the seminar was very satisfactory. Really interesting to see candidates being involved in it; this approach really impressed me!”

The British Council intends to organise another seminar for CPE candidates who will register for the May 2013 examination with the British Council and also make the seminar available to candidates in all parts of Greece online.

The British Council has been providing Cambridge ESOL exams in Greece for more than 45 years.

FCE for Schools pass rate climbed to 75% in the May 2012 examination session! Through the use of familiar, school aged learner-oriented topics, FCE for Schools has set new standards at the assessment of B2 level knowledge for Greek candidates as demonstrated by this success.
