Teaching Grammar: Is it necessary?

The current issue of ELT NEWS is focusing on Teaching Grammar. Grammar instruction has a long history, with its purpose evolving over time. In the past, grammar was seen as a way to train the mental faculties of memory and reason. It focused on learning rules and their application. However, in the early twentieth century, many scholars abandoned grammar instruction, believing it lacked scientific value. Today, the question of grammar's importance and how to teach it continues to be debated.

Some teachers argue that teaching the basics of grammar, such as parts of speech, sentence patterns, and common errors in spelling, punctuation, and usage, is sufficient. They believe that as long as students have a solid foundation in these areas, they can effectively communicate in writing. Others question whether technical terms and advanced grammar concepts are essential for students to know.

While some argue that grammar instruction is unnecessary, it is important to recognize that grammar is the structure of any language. Even as we read this passage, we are using grammar to understand the sentences and their meanings. Teaching grammar can help students understand the rules and patterns of English, enabling them to communicate more effectively. It is not about memorizing a rigid list of rules, but rather about providing students with the basics and building upon that foundation. By teaching grammar in a meaningful and learner-centered way, educators can help students develop and improve all language skills.

As a student, I learned grammar with the legendary series ‘Steps in English Grammar and Idiom’ by Dimitris Stavropoulos. The explanations of grammatical usage were short and to the point. I used the series during my early teaching years until it ‘came of age’ but I made sure when teaching grammar that I provided clear and simple explanations and lots of examples.

Examples are crucial in helping students grasp grammar concepts. Realistic examples from authentic materials, such as advertisements, cartoons, songs, and poems, can make grammar memorable and help students apply their knowledge in practical ways.

In the end, the amount of time dedicated to teaching grammar will vary among teachers. Some may incorporate it regularly, while others may focus more on other aspects of language. The key is to strike a balance that meets the needs of students and aligns with the goals of the curriculum. By providing clear explanations, using relevant examples, and offering a variety of exercises, teachers can help students develop their grammar skills while keeping them engaged in the learning process.

In conclusion, teaching grammar can be a challenging task for teachers, but it is an important aspect of language instruction. While there are different perspectives on the extent of grammar instruction, providing clear explanations, relevant examples, and a variety of exercises can help students develop their grammar skills effectively.
