Artificial Intelligence and the use of Chat GPT in particular have greatly facilitated our access to a vast amount of information. This, in turn, has positively enhanced our role as educators. In an instant, customized exercises, texts, and supplementary material lie at our fingertips, ready to be incorporated into our teaching methods or even substitute existing material.
Indeed, we have all been exposed to these new tools through presentations and seminars. Yet, although one can sense their usefulness and positive contribution to the teachers’ role, they can also sense a kind of distance from knowledge itself, as if getting closer to more information creates a directly opposite attraction. Relying on AI to provide ideas for personal or professional use entails the risk of setting the innovative self off track, the critical eye off guard, and could eventually cultivate a more passive and mechanistic approach to learning and assessing information, which is somewhat contrary to the dialectic and dynamic nature of one’s relation to knowledge.
In a dim scenario, newly published ELT books are mainly written by AI tools, and articles and essays expose the ideas of a fast-inquired database instead of the products of one’s intellect molded from the interaction with authentic sources. This condition, if not critically approached, may compromise the relation of younger generations to knowledge. Acknowledging the fact that the technological flow cannot possibly be reversed, as educators, we need to set the example of correct usage and decide what we want to empower, the artificial mind or the authentic authorial voice within, striving to strike a healthy balance between the two.
