Finland has introduced new regulations that significantly restrict the use of smartphones in schools, aiming to improve students’ concentration, well-being, and classroom engagement.

Under the updated rules, the use of mobile phones during lessons will generally be prohibited unless the device is required for a specific educational activity. The policy allows teachers to decide when smartphones may be used for learning purposes, but routine personal use during class will no longer be permitted.

Reducing Distractions in the Classroom

Education authorities say the changes are designed to minimize distractions and help students focus more effectively on learning. Teachers have increasingly reported that mobile phones can interrupt lessons, reduce attention spans, and make it harder for students to participate fully in classroom activities.

By limiting phone use, schools hope to create a more focused learning environment where students are more engaged with teaching materials and discussions.

The updated regulations also strengthen teachers’ authority to manage mobile device use in the classroom. Educators will have the right to intervene if phones disrupt teaching, including asking students to put them away.

Schools are expected to establish clear rules about when and how phones can be used during the school day. In many cases, students may still use their devices during breaks or outside class time, depending on school policies.

Supporting Student Well-Being

Another important motivation behind the policy is student well-being. Experts have raised concerns that excessive smartphone use can affect mental health, sleep patterns, and social interaction.

Limiting phone use during school hours is therefore seen as a way to encourage healthier habits and support better face-to-face communication among students.

Finland’s decision reflects a wider international movement. Many countries and school systems have recently introduced measures to control smartphone use in schools, responding to concerns about digital distraction and the impact of constant connectivity on learning.

By adopting these restrictions, Finland aims to balance the benefits of technology with the need for focused, effective classroom environments.
