Workshop: Engaging Students to Speak and Write – October 25 Athens

Why don't students like school? How can we re-engage kids in learning?

Through this interactive workshop, Michael Robbs and Panagiota Frytzala will ask some of the great questions in teaching regarding the subject of student engagement.

• Why do students forget everything we tell them, and yet remember elaborate details of other things they see on TV and on line?
• Why are some pupils “de-schoolic”?
• How can we meet the needs of learners?
• Which activities get students talking in English?
• What writing skills do students actually want?
• How can we adapt the course book materials to fit these purposes?

It is with that in mind that this interactive workshop will start with some of the fundamental questions regarding the subject of student engagement where you will be encouraged to combine your background both as a student and as a teacher. However, the main focus of this workshop will be on actively involving you in various classroom activities that make writing and speaking more fun so that you can try them out and see how you could fit them in your own teaching. These activities take a more visual and kinesthetic approach to learning aiming at fully utilizing the students’ cognitive abilities and thus make students actually see writing and speaking in English in a different light, even in the case of exam preparation.

This is a workshop for novice as well as experienced teachers of English as we are all constantly faced with the challenge of making our lessons more relevant, and thus more interesting, for our students. Especially when it comes to writing and speaking in English, our students tend to become disengaged because they might be unmotivated or not confident enough, especially when faced with exams. So, the question is how we can motivate our students to write and speak confidently.

In this workshop participants will learn and practice

  • classroom activities and tasks that will make speaking and writing more fun.

  • a more visual and kinesthetic approach to learning aiming at fully utilizing the students’ cognitive abilities and thus make students actually see writing and speaking in English in a different light, even in the case of exam preparation.

  • how to make a lesson more relevant and more interesting for our students.

  • how to boost student motivation and confidence, especially when faced with exams.
