Senior Research & Validation Manager

Salary: £40,400 - £45,400 (Grade G)

Cambridge English Language Assessment is a part of Cambridge Assessment, a department of the University of Cambridge. We provide exams in English for speakers of other languages taken by over 3 million candidates world-wide each year, as well as the leading range of qualifications for language teachers.

The Research and Validation Group is recruiting a Senior Research and Validation Manager to carry out and coordinate a full range of research and validation activities related to Cambridge English examinations.


You will take responsibility for setting and implementing the research agenda and designing specific projects; conducting and supervising operational test analyses (i.e. relating to live examination sessions); test design and development, preparing reports for presentation and publication to various stakeholders. Although focusing on particular examinations from the outset, you will be expected in time to be involved in other research and validation work as required.

You will join a highly qualified and experienced team in the Research and Validation Group responsible for the validation of the full range of Cambridge English examinations. It is essential that you have an MA with a strong quantitative component, e.g., Language Assessment, Educational Measurement, Computer Science or another relevant field – and a PhD is preferred. Evidence of ability to design and carry out quantitative and qualitative research is required with a focus on measurement or computer based testing. You will have, or be prepared to develop, expertise in educational testing and evaluation. 

You will need excellent communication skills for oral presentations and report writing, excellent interpersonal skills for dealing with internal and external stakeholders. You should be able to show evidence of a high level of numeracy and strong analytical skills. Knowledge of a range of statistical software (such as SAS) will be an advantage as will familiarity with Cambridge English assessments. Cambridge English validation work is highly specialized and training will be provided both in the first few months and as an ongoing feature of staff development throughout your career in Cambridge English.
